Love Bites

"Love Bites" is a collaborative lathe-cut LP bringing together Douglas Gordon's longstanding interest in language, repetition and appropriation with Le Scrawl's singular musical vocabulary.

The edition comprises two tracks, both titled "Love Bites," that rework Rod Stewart's 1978 hit "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" Performed by Le Scrawl's original lineup with Douglas Gordon on vocals, the recordings pivot effortlessly between grindcore, ska, disco, improvisation and spoken word, embracing abrupt shifts in tempo, mood, and style. The arrangements draw on compositions originally released by Rod Stewart and iconic pieces of "Heartwork" by death metal idols Carcass, transforming familiar material into something entirely new.

The second recording, also titled "Love Bites," takes the form of a telephone message left for Gordon's mother. As the monologue progresses, the listener gradually realizes that its seemingly casual recollections and digressions are woven from the lyrics of "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" Almost imperceptibly, the familiar lyrics are transformed into a poetic, humorous, and profound meditation, blurring the boundaries between popular song, personal memory and spoken narrative.

The recording features Peter Weiss (drums, backing vocals), Simon Weiss (guitar, backing vocals), Mario Anders (bass, vocals), Anne Freitag (keyboards, flute), Stefan Gocht (trombone, trumpet), Laura Gaspari (vocals), and Douglas Gordon (vocals, spoken word).

Each copy is individually lathe cut and incorporates a U.S. dime embedded within a die-cut opening in the vinyl, referencing the lyric, "Give me a dime so I can phone my mother." As every copy is cut and fitted with a unique coin, no two are exactly alike.

Douglas Gordon (b. 1966, Glasgow) is an artist working across film, video, photography, sound, text and installation. His work has been the subject of major solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Tate Britain, the Hayward Gallery, the Museum für Moderne Kunst, and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, among many others. Gordon represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale and has received numerous international honors, including the Turner Prize and the Hugo Boss Prize.

Le Scrawl is an experimental grindcore band formed in Potsdam, Germany, in 1989. Drawing from various genres of music such as jazz, ska, lounge music and free improvisation, the group developed a unique sound defined by abrupt stylistic shifts, technical precision, and irreverent humor. Selected releases include "Q" (1995), "Too Short to Ignore (1991–1999)" (2003), "Eager to Please" (2004), and "Snowblind" (2010).
